Living under water...

About sis Italian divers planning to live underwater for two weeks to show it's possible to colonize the sea floor.  My question is why?  Don't get me wrong, I'd love to live underwater for two weeks at 50' but I'm not sure I understand the value of living under the ocean.  It'd be as much work and risk to simply bolt the diving bells to an uninhabitable rock face of a mountain.  It seems more like a publicity stunt.  They don't seem to be farming, mining or any other resource creation activity down there.  Plus, doesn't NASA/NOAA already do something like this off the coast of Florida?
